‘Infections and inequities’
My interests as a medical student - learning about microbes and student anti-apartheid activism - shaped my career. I will share my long and scenic journey from an NHS clinician with no formal academic training to a Professor of Infection and Inequities. The journey spans three countries, five viruses and the leadership of three medical organisations.
The importance of providing access to clinical trials was evident when novel HIV therapies were lifesaving. As my career progressed, my research focused on understanding barriers to inclusion in research for under-represented groups. The SHARE Research collaborative for health equity was founded to increase the diversity of both researchers and participants. These principles were applied to establish the international SHARE-net collaborative during the mpox (monkeypox) pandemic.
I will also discuss how speaking up as an EDI lead has helped me to understand how my own intersectional identities have shaped my journey.
