Alumni Remembered - Dr David Hughes

An appreciation for the late Dr David Hughes (1930 - 2025), Consultant Chest Physician at The London Hospital from 1968 to 1996.

Published:

I first met David just as he was about to begin his consultant career and I was House Physician to Dr Kenneth Perry. He was a constant friend and support to me and to many of my colleagues at The London, especially Jerome Cotter, Duncan Empey, Trevor Beedham, Michael Glynn and many others.

He somehow managed to combine his clinical duties with his research at the Wellcome Foundation, his teaching and care of students, the curatorship of the Pathology Museum, an interest in The London Hospital Archives, his work with The Friends of The London Hospital, his membership of the Society of Apothecaries, and his many other interests.

What he was able to achieve was due to a remarkable intellect, sound clinical acumen, boundless enthusiasm, good humour and the love of his family. His wife Gloria was a remarkable woman, who attended many hospital functions over the years. David and Gloria had three children, his two daughters (Carly and Amanda) who qualified in medicine at The London and their son, Edward.

David was a great London Hospital man in that institution’s finest tradition.
