School of Economics and Finance rises to 8th in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework 2021

Queen Mary University of London has excelled in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), confirming once again our status as one of the best research-intensive universities in the UK.

Published:

In the subject area of Economics and Econometrics, the School of Economics and Finance has ranked 8th overall in the UK, as well as 4th for Research Outputs and 10th for Research Impact.

Across Queen Mary, 92% of our research was assessed as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’ and across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, eight subject areas were ranked in the top 10 in the UK for Research Outputs. This exceptionally strong performance is a testament to our outstanding community of staff, students and alumni.

These REF results, coupled with recently being ranked top in the country for social mobility and becoming the first university to receive the Platinum Watermark for Public Engagement,  demonstrate our unique ability to combine world-leading research with an unrivalled commitment to social justice and social mobility.

The Research Excellence Framework evaluates the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions, assesses university submissions on three distinct areas: outputs, impact and environment. The previous Research Excellence Framework was published in 2014.
