Our Girls in Maths taster day showcases everything we love about Maths. This event is for Year 12 and Year 13 students who identify as female and/or non-binary, are currently studying A-level Maths, and are interested in studying Maths at university.

Spend the day with us on campus and get a taste of what it’s like to study at Queen Mary’s School of Mathematical Sciences!

Event Highlights

You will explore with Professor Claudia Garetto the hidden history of mathematics. Mathematics is often presented as a story written by a few famous men, but that story is incomplete. We will uncover the brilliant women who shaped mathematics, from ancient problem-solvers to modern pioneers, celebrating curiosity, creativity, and courage through examples of influential female mathematicians and fun interactive activities.

You will also learn from Dr Katy Clough about gravity and astrophysical black holes, why falling into them is usually a bad idea, and have the chance to ask questions inspired by science fiction, including wormholes, time travel, and the Big Bang.

Throughout the day, you will have the chance to:

  • Take part in taster lectures
  • Chat with students and society representatives
  • Explore the campus on a guided tour
  • Enjoy refreshments provided on the day
