School of History Celebrates Success in REF2021

The School of History is delighted with our outstanding REF 2021 assessment results, published today, which recognise our growing research expertise and the change it makes in the world.

The School of History is ranked 7th overall among every higher education institution in the UK, according to Times Higher Education – and Queen Mary’s own calculations show that we are #2 for the percentage of research outputs rated at the highest quality level (4*) and #5 for overall research output. These achievements would not be possible without the dedicated work of our academic staff and everyone who works alongside them.

This latest REF assessment shows that we produce exemplary research outputs, and we now look to maintain this momentum, continue providing the very best support for our researchers in an environment in which they can flourish, and to find new ways to demonstrate our impact on the world.

Head of the School of History, Professor Daniel Todman, said: 'This is an extraordinary collective achievement, which sits alongside our excellence in education and marks us out as one of the best all-round Schools in the country.'
