‘Qurʼan 38 (Sūrat Ṣād) as rewritten Bible?’

Saqib Hussain, D.Phil., University of Oxford

Have you ever wondered what narratives the Qurʼan shares with the Hebrew Bible?

This paper looks at the different strategies the Qurʼan employs when drawing upon the Biblical tradition. Qurʼan 38 is used as a case in point to show that the three central prophetic stories (David, Solomon, and Job) are not so much allusions to Biblical and para-Biblical material, but a rewrite of that material for the Qur'an's own purpose.
