PHU Lecture - Dr Jon Hoover - 'Ibn Taymiyya's Legacy for Modern Jihadism'

30 October 2018

Time: 6:15 - 8:00pm
Venue: ArtsTwo LT

For the second PHU public lecture of the year, we have invited the highly regarded scholar, Dr Jon Hoover, to talk about his expetise in islamic studies, more specifically Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328). Ibn Taymiyya is the pre-modern Muslim scholar most frequently cited by jihadist movements like ISIS and al-Qaeda to justify their violence. Yet, Muslim scholars of different kinds argue that Ibn Taymiyya cannot be used to support such violence. This lecture will evaluate the arguments of both sides and show that jihadist readings of Ibn Taymiyya do not follow the pattern of his life and thought.
