From exploring flood-prone Florida to working with local schools in the East End, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) Geography and Environmental Science students have been taking their learning out of the classroom and into action this semester.
The School of Geography newsletter [PDF 880KB], now online, includes stories about all these activities and more, including the successful launch of a brand new series of events for prospective students – the Festival of Geography. The three events took place in February and March and were for UK-based students holding offers to study at QMUL Geography this autumn. Hundreds of visitors came to our east London campus to see for themselves what studying with us would be like. From talks about field classes to lab and campus tours, it was not only packed full of info but a celebration of our subjects too.
In other news, you can read about how first year students got involved in a consultation on whether London should become the world’s first national park city. BA Geographer Tanzina Khatun talks about her experience of taking part and why she wants to help protect and promote her hometown. Meanwhile, second- and third-year students travelled to Los Angeles to explore the stark divide between rich and poor and to ask questions about how and why cities change.
