DERI Seminar with Prof David Berman

When: Thursday, May 22, 2025, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Where: Teams

Speaker: Prof David Berman, Prof of Theoretical Physics, QMUL

Title:   AI for Metabolic Modelling

Abstract:  We will describe the steps in constructing a metabolic model and how one solves the model.
A hybrid approach is taken where one combines contemporary AI methods with more traditional techniques. A case study is given for EColi where we will present a state-of-the-art model. We will also describe how one uses the model for real world problems. This is work in collaboration with Cambridge Consultants and Hybrid Intelligence and funded by CapGemini.

Bio:
After working on string theory and fundamental physics for 20 or so years David moved into AI. His interests range from using physics to provide novel AI techniques- in particular, he is known for the role of the renormalisation group flow as a model for learning - to using AI to solve scientific problems. He has applied AI techniques to pure mathematics and extensively to synthetic biology. Over the last three years he has been on leave working in industry where he led the Cambridge Consultants AI department. During his time as AI lead, he tripled revenue and Forbes named the Cambridge Consultants in its top-ten AI consultancies.
