Novel Strategies for the Enhancement of Bone Regeneration in Healthy and Compromised Patients

Joint Symposium of Regenerative Dentistry and MINTIG Research Groups

Professor Paul Hatton, PhD, FIMMM.  Professor of Biomaterials Science, School of Clinical Dentistry, and Faculty Director for Research and Innovation, University of Sheffield.

Title:  Advanced Synthetic Bone Grafts in the Future:  Bioactive Glasses versus Calcium Phosphate-Based Technologies.

Bio:  Professor Hatton joined the School of Clinical Dentistry in 1992 as a Non-Clinical Lecturer in Biomaterials Science, following postdoctoral research funded by the Medical Research Council, industry, and European Commission.  He was promoted to a Personal Chair in 2002, and took on the role of Director of Research for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health in 2022.  Professor Hatton is one of Europe’s leading bioengineers, with an interdisciplinary research group working on innovative healthcare and manufacturing technologies, to improve the repair and regeneration of human musculoskeletal and oral tissues.  Research interests are centred on the interaction of living cells and tissues with synthetic and processed natural materials used in the manufacture of medical devices or regenerative medicine technologies.  He has published extensively on biomaterials, including nanostructured and bioinspired systems and their biocompatibility, and demonstrated how a range of physical and biological modifications may be applied to enhance bio-functionality and potentially improve clinical performance.  He applies this expertise extensively in undergraduate and postgraduate education, and is well-known for his passionate support of academic-industrial collaboration and knowledge exchange to drive economic growth and societal benefit.

Dr Nikos Mardas, Clinical Reader in Periodontology and Consultant in Periodontology, Institute of Dentistry, Centre for Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine & Centre for Oral Clinical Research, Queen Mary University of London.

Title:  Preclinical Models for Bone Regeneration in the Craniofacial Region.

Bio:  Dr Mardas qualified in Dentistry from Athens University in 1992.  He completed his MS degree in Periodontology (1997) and PhD (2005), at the Royal Dental College, University of Aarhus, Denmark.  Between 2005-2015, he was a Senior Lecturer / Honorary Specialist and MClinDent Programme Co-ordinator in Periodontology Unit, at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.  In 2015, he was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in the Centre for Adult Oral Health, Barts and The London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.  Dr Mardas has over 25 years of private practice and University / Hospital based clinical experience in treatment of periodontal diseases, including conventional and regenerative periodontal surgery, periodontal plastic surgery, alveolar bone augmentation procedures and dental implants.  His pre-clinical and clinical research focusses on periodontal, bone and gingival tissue regeneration and wound healing; and the testing of biomaterials.  He has also a special interest on the outcome of the above-mentioned treatment principles in specific systemic conditions, such as osteoporosis.  Dr Mardas has published several papers and text book chapters in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of periodontal, bone regeneration and implant dentistry, and he is an Editorial Board Member for Clinical Oral Implant Research and regular reviewer for the major dental journals in this field.  In 2011, Dr Mardas was awarded the Basic Research Prize for the European Association for Osseointegration.
