Project Title: Evaluating the effectiveness of a mathematics intervention for students in Primary School

Summary: As society becomes progressively more technological, the effectiveness of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education becomes crucial for promoting countries’ success and economic growth. Higher levels of STEM achievement, especially in mathematics, are associated with higher employment rates, better job prospects, and greater life satisfaction. However, results from the Program for International Students Assessments consistently show that most Western countries underachieve in mathematics, with a significant achievement gap for low-income students, starting from primary school.

The proposed project will evaluate the effectiveness of mathematics intervention aimed at increasing mathematics performance and attitudes toward mathematics. The intervention has been developed and is implemented by Number Champions, a London-based non-
profit organisation.

We will work closely with stakeholders to formally assess the validity and short and long-term benefits of this intervention that specifically targets children at risk. Since increasing STEM achievement and engagement is a priority, scalable interventions are necessary to help children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, reach their full potential. By evaluating the effectiveness of a scalable mathematics intervention, this project will guide future implementations within educational and policy settings and will contribute to fostering learning and innovation across socio-economic brackets.
