Profile

Dr Patrick Baughan is Programme Manager for Queen Mary Academy’s taught programmes in academic practice (CILT and PGCAP), leading their development and delivery across the University. His work focuses on teaching and learning, curriculum and programme development, assessment and feedback, and the professional development of higher education staff. 

Patrick has over 25 years’ experience in higher education as an educational developer, educational researcher, and academic leader. Prior to joining Queen Mary, he was Head of Education at The University of Law, where he led the University’s postgraduate education programmes, and key institutional initiatives including embedding sustainability across the curriculum. He has also held senior educational development roles at Advance HE, University College London (UCL) and City St George’s, University of London. At the University of Leicester, he was Head of Distance Learning for programmes in training and human resource management.  

Alongside his institutional work, he has designed, led and contributed to national enhancement projects involving multiple universities, sector guidance, and collaborative initiatives. More recently, he has undertaken international consultancy work supporting the academic design and development of a new university, contributing to curriculum architecture, flexible programme design and academic frameworks. 

Patrick’s research and scholarly interests centre on assessment and feedback, curriculum design, higher education policy and educational change. His PhD research at Lancaster University explored student and staff sociologists’ experiences of sustainability in higher education. In addition, he is interested in qualitative research approaches, including phenomenography and narrative inquiry. 

He has delivered keynote addresses and invited presentations nationally and internationally, and has published in journal articles, book chapters and edited collections. He is currently External Examiner for the MA Higher Education at the University of East Anglia and has previously held external examining responsibilities in educational development and the social sciences. He has served for over a decade as Co-convener of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) Researching Higher Education Network, co-founded the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) Learning, Teaching and Assessment Network, and previously convened the SRHE Newer Researchers Network. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). 

Teaching

Patrick teaches on the CILT and PGCAP programmes at Queen Mary, University of London.  

Research

Research Interests:

Patrick’s research explores learning, teaching and educational change in higher education, with particular interests in assessment and feedback, curriculum design, education for sustainable development, and the professional development of university educators. He completed his PhD in Educational Research at Lancaster University. His methodological interests include qualitative approaches to higher education research, including phenomenography and narrative inquiry, and the ways these approaches can illuminate the experiences and practices of students and staff.

Publications

Patrick has published in journals including the International Journal for Academic Development, Postdigital Science and Education, Studies in Educational Evaluation and the International Journal of Educational Integrity. His book chapters have appeared in volumes published by Bloomsbury, Routledge, Emerald, Springer and IGI Global. 

 He has produced a number of edited collections for Advance HE:
