What you'll study

This programme is designed to enable working dental practitioners to develop their knowledge and clinical skills in endodontics.

This is a three-year part-time programme, requiring a commitment of at least one day a week. It also requires physical attendance one day every fortnight.

We will provide you with opportunities to explore up-to-date, evidence-informed endodontics. You will also become familiar with current endodontic concepts and research while exchanging ideas with your peers and reflecting on your personal clinical experiences.

Your pre-clinical laboratory sessions will include demonstrations, ‘hands-on’ practical exercises, discussions and feedback.

In your clinical practice sessions, you will be treating selected patients under supervision, review patient management and their outcomes. You will also take part in case presentations involving case discussions, reflection and review of outcomes.

As part of the clinical module you will have the opportunity to use dental operating microscopes to carry out endodontic treatment; although the number of cases and the type of treatment you will encounter will be dependent on cases available and referrals received.

You will gain research skills. You will also learn about assessing the scientific literature and conduct an audit or research project.

This programme is jointly hosted by the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Dental Teaching Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust.

Compulsory/Core modules

This module is an academic module focussing primarily on the basic science of endodontology.

This module is an academic module focussing primarily on the clinical basis of endodontics and its interface with other aspects of dentistry.

This module is a practical module essential for the development of the skills required for competency in endodontic techniques. Students will need to demonstrate satisfactory completion of this module as a pre-requisite for the clinical module which follows this module.

This core module comprises supervised clinical patient treatment sessions. At the end of this module, students are required to submit two clinical case reports of patients they have treated.

In this module, the students will build on skills in conducting a search and appraisal of the literature on an agreed endodontic topic. At the end of this module, students will be required to produce a literature review report.

In this module, students will build on the principles and protocols for audit and/or research. The students will select an agreed endodontic topic, design a strategy, collect relevant data and analyse the findings. At the end of this module, students will be required to produce a report of their project.

Assessment

  • Informal verbal feedback on performance
  • A competency-based test at the end of the Laboratory Endodontic Skills module, which you must pass to progress to the Clinical Skills module and treating patients
  • Module assessments include written papers, practical tests, essay questions, viva voce, clinical case reports, literature reviews and audit presentations

Dissertation

For the Literature review and Audit project modules, each requires the completion of a dissertation.

Teaching

This is a three-year part-time programme, which requires a minimum commitment of at least one day a week and physical attendance one day every fortnight. On the weeks when your physical attendance is not required, you will still need to put aside a day for personal study and completion of assignments.

You will be taught through a combination of seminars, laboratory skills sessions, supervised clinical sessions, self-directed learning, case presentations and personal reading.

You will be assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.

"The MSc has given me an extensive range of theoretical knowledge combined with practical skills gained from both Phantom Head Practice and Patient Clinics. I now have confidence in my endodontic skills which has enhanced my ability to offer high quality treatment for my patients in practice".

"The MSc was run in a very supportive environment with a team of highly experienced and skilled clinicians. Support was always very accessible, and supervisors were always happy to be contacted either face-to-face or via Zoom calls for additional support".

"On Clinic, the materials and equipment available was up to the highest standard. The Clinical Support Team were all great with a ratio of 1:1 supervisor to student ratio in some cases".

"The Phantom Head Clinic" was fantastic with access to microscopes, and state of the art equipment. The phantom head clinic allowed inexperienced clinicians to practice with novel materials and equipment to build up confidence and skills prior to starting on patient clinics".

"This MSc has allowed me to enhance my Clinical Endodontic skills and offer high quality treatment for my patients in practice and accept referrals from other practitioners. The MSc has opened up other opportunities to pursue further areas of research and teaching within dentistry".
