The programme is aimed at students who already have an in depth knowledge of a mechanically-based Engineering area, and who wish to specialise further in an area of Mechanical Engineering. You will be able to choose study modules that align with your background, your choice of specialisation area and your project topic.
This programme will teach you advanced skills in computational modelling, numerical and experimental techniques in one of the following areas of mechanical engineering: solid mechanics, robotics and automation, or thermofluids and combustion. The MSc will enable you to develop novel computational and technology products for the mechanical engineering industries as well as perform design and analysis of mechanical engineering systems
This MSc includes a substantial research project in advanced mechanical engineering, supervised by staff working in a wide range of research areas and working in our excellent facilities. These include high performance computing clusters owned by QMUL, a wide range of internal combustion engines, heat transfer facilities, wind tunnels, an anechoic chamber, a UK cueSim Flight Simulator, a France-Price Induction jet engine test bench, and materials synthesis and characterisation labs. Whenever possible we try to link up project students with one of our industrial partners, for example last year two of our students worked on a project in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover.

The MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering includes 1 compulsory, and 7 optional taught modules, as shown on the structure below. Starting in Semester A the programme also includes a research project, which is completed under close supervision throughout the year, and submitted in September.

This project will be based in the labs and gives you the opportunity to apply the theory you will have learnt in the taught modules while taking advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities within SEMS

An undergraduate degree (minimum good second class honours or equivalent) in a mechanically-based engineering subject or equivalent. Each application is individually assessed; you are recommended to contact us for guidance in specific cases. IELTS 6.5 is required.

Learning and teaching
As a student in the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) you will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, and a variety of coursework.
The methods of assessment are coursework and formal examinations, which take place in May. Many courses will include continuous assessment so that some or all of the work you do during the course counts towards the final mark.

Our graduates work in research, development and consultancy positions within the engineering and materials industries for companies such as BAE Systems, Atkins and JRI Orthopaedics. Many graduates apply their degree knowledge directly, working as engineers and/or scientists in sectors relevant to those they have studied.
Some graduates use their MSc to secure positions within the wider fields of mechanical and general engineering. Others work in areas beyond those directly related to their degree, including regulatory bodies, teaching, finance and the NHS. The range of skills developed through our programmes, coupled with opportunities for extracurricular activities and work experience, has enabled our graduates to move into careers across many successful
companies both in the UK and worldwide. A significant proportion of our graduates also go on to undertake PhDs in engineering and materials science.
