Why are there new clothing restrictions in French classrooms?

Published:

Professor Rainbow Murray, a specialist in French Politics at Queen Mary, was a panellist on Al Jazeera's Inside Story programme, looking at the recent decision by the French government to ban certain types of clothing in French schools.

She said: "This is not religious dress - this is a way of imposing yet another restriction on the way that Muslim women are allowed to dress which there is a long tradition of in France. I don't think this is about secularism anymore - it is about culture wars."
