Female leaders in the Conservative Party

Published:

Queen Mary’s Professor of Politics, Rainbow Murray, explained the “glass cliff” phenomenon in relation to Liz Truss becoming Prime Minister.

“The principle is that when everything is going well, a man wants to be in charge but when things are going badly you give an opportunity to a woman to come and either clean up the mess or take the blame for it. Once things are on a more even keel again, the men want to come back and take over,” Professor Murray said.

This was covered in BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour (from 8:40)
