Professor of Politics, Professor Tim Bale appeared on Euronews Now to discuss the UK diverging from EU rules and standards in the ongoing trade negotiations. Professor Bale said: “It will create a really big problem for the EU because what they don’t want is a competitor right on the border of Europe, able to undercut European firms, and therefore in some senses gain what they see as an unfair advantage. I think the scope of the agreement will in that case been much smaller, the UK have already said they want a Canada-style agreement, which is actually pretty minimalist.”
