Degree Apprenticeships “bash down the doors to closed professions”

As the first Russell Group university to start offering Degree Apprenticeships in 2015, Queen Mary University of London has always led the way in new approaches to learning.

“Degree Apprenticeships are courses that are co-designed with employers and give students valuable work experience while they study part-time,” explains Jamie Hilder, Apprenticeships Manager at Queen Mary.

“The biggest benefit for students is a job at the end of their course, paying around £33k per year on average. Plus they get paid a salary for working while studying, meaning they enter the full-time jobs market with four years’ experience under their belt and no debt compared to traditional students.”

Private partners

The benefit for businesses is huge too. Blue chip organisations are lining up to partner with Queen Mary in order to attract the best talent. Current partners span various industries and the growing list includes BBC, KMPG, John Lewis, Goldman Sachs, British Airways and PlayStation.

“Student cohorts also tend to be more diverse than those on traditional courses,” continues Hilder. “We see more of a gender balance in courses like technology and medicine, which traditionally tend to be male-dominated. There are also students from a diverse range of backgrounds. For many, Degree Apprenticeships are the answer to bashing down the doors to previously closed professions.”
