Students at History Day 2023 at the Archives and Special Collections stand
For those who attended our stand, we offered badgemaking (so people could literally take something away from the event). A range of images from our Archives and Special Collections were provided to get creative with and start conversations about our collections. We made over thirty badges on the day.
Our most popular images came from our People’s Palace and East London College collections, Westfield College student press and the marbled flyleaves of our rare books. The most popular image was an illustration of the People’s Palace included in the “One Shilling Fund” appeal (Ref. QM/1/2/17). The People’s Palace was a recreational and educational charity which opened 1887 and the Victorian People’s Palace buildings are still a part of the Queens Building on the Mile End campus.
There’s still time to explore the online resources created with the event if you missed joining in person. Through History Day’s “Discover Collections” you can browse all participating organisations’ digital resources. You can see any of the images featured in badgemaking and discover more about Queen Mary’s Archives and Special Collections online.
Thanks again to everyone who came along – see you again in November 2024!
