Copying collections
The Archives provides copies of items held in the collections in accordance with the Archives Access Policy (download Archives Access Policy [PDF 165KB] file).
Self-service photography
Archive users are permitted to take photographs of the collections, in the Archives Reading Room, using their own digital camera. Users wishing to take photographs, should inform the Archives Reading Room Supervisor and complete a Self-Service Photography form (download PDF [PDF 93KB] file). Users will also be required to adhere to the following:
- Flash photography and tripods are prohibited
- Copies are for personal non-commercial research purposes
- Comply with current UK copyright legislation
Copies for private research
A digitisation service is offered for users requiring copies for private research. To order copies please complete an Application for Copies [DOC 66KB] form.
Payments are made via card through the eshop but always get in touch first to confirm a quote for your order before making a payment. Orders can also be payed via invoice if the total is more than £50.
You will be instructed whether your request can be fulfilled via Standard or Non-Standard Photography. A Non-Standard Photography fee is applied based on the condition of the item. It will apply to fragile, oversized, or items requiring additional care during the digitisation process or any post-production work.
| Type of copy | Price per image |

| Standard Photography (first image) | £10 |
| Standard Photography (subsequent images) | £0.50 |
| Non-Standard Photography (first image) | £15 |
| Non-Standard Photography (subsequent images) | £1 |
All copy orders will be sent digitally unless otherwise requested in JPEG, TIFF or PDF formats (if you have a preference please note this on your form). Requests for physical copies may be subject to additional charges for postage.
Please note:
- For preservation reasons, not all collections are suitable for copying. Wherever possible we will offer an alternative, but we reserve the right to refuse to copy items where the copying process will cause damage.
- Copy orders can only be processed in accordance with current UK copyright law. Copyright in photographs is particularly stringent, and the copyright holders permission should be obtained by the researcher, before the order can be processed.
