Cosmic Con
Due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), and for the safety of our visitors, students and staff, we postponed QMUL's Physics Research in School Environments conference Cosmic Con 2020 at Queen Mary University of London, scheduled for 25 March 2020. As a stopgap measure during these uncertain times we are now moving this event online as Cosmic Con(line) 2020 on Saturday 4 July 2020 10:30am-12:00pm.
Students from local schools have been working on research projects in collaboration with QMUL and this is the opportunity for them to present their work. Family, friends, teachers and QMUL staff, students and invited guests will be able to join us to see the results of their efforts. To take part in the conference you must register in advance here, please note that only one registration per device/household is required. For safeguarding reasons a parent/guardian must be present with any individuals under the age of 18 throughout the conference.
Programme
We hope to offer an experience as close to an in-person conference as possible. Therefore, the programme will intersperse students talks with a number of facilitated interactive breakout rooms where students can discuss their posters. All presentation materials will be available on this page ahead of the conference. This page is not publicly linked to anywhere.

How the conference will work
Code of Conduct: Participating in this online conference means we expect the following:
- If under 18, a parent/guardian will be present throughout the conference.
- Responsible behaviour together with respect towards other participants and members of staff at all times.
- Once registered please do not share the link to the session with anyone else.
- Please do not attempt to record the conference in any way.
- Please be aware of your surroundings. If there are any unexpected noises please mute your microphone. Ensure that your backdrop is appropriate and stop the video if needed.
- If your behaviour is inappropriate in anyway staff will immediately mute microphone/stop video/stop chat access as needed and warn you that if the behaviour continues, you will be removed from the session. If the behaviour is serious enough you will be immediately removed from the session.
Joining: The conference will be held on Zoom and will not be recorded in any way. You should either download and install the app (this can be on a computer, laptop, phone, or tablet) or sign-up to an account to use it in your browser well ahead of the conference. You must register to receive the link to participate. Upon joining the conference:
- Please use your full name followed by your school or organisation name in brackets
- You will then be put into a waiting room until one of the hosts lets you into the main room
Main room: Upon entering the main room your camera and microphone will be turned off by default. Please do not change this in the main room unless you are giving a presentation, when you can unmute your microphone. All presentations will be displayed by one of the hosts, whom you can instruct to change slides or highlight specific elements verbally. Once you have finished presenting please mute your microphone again. The chat will be enabled to everyone publicly.
Breakout rooms: Poster presentations will be done through a number of randomised breakout rooms. The host of the breakout room will facilitate the presentations, showing the different posters to be discussed. During the breakout rooms you may use your camera if you wish, but please mute your microphone unless invited to speak. Every poster will have an opportunity to give a quick (no longer than 1 minute) elevator pitch which will be followed by discussions. Please use the "raise hand" feature in Zoom to indicate you would like to ask a question and the host will come to you in turn. You may also write messages in the chat if you do not wish to speak out loud.
If you have or foresee issues (such as technical or accessibility barriers) with any of the above, please email us.
