Profile

Dr Eliane L. Bodanese MSc, PhD, MIEEESenior Lecturer at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in QMUL.  Electrical Engineering degree from the Federal University of Parana (Brazil). M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil). Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London (UK). Published more than 50 refereed journal/conference papers and research interests include sensor networks and the Internet of Things, human activity detection and recognition through minimal non-intrusive sensing, indoor and outdoor localization, communication support for emergencies, heterogeneous wireless environments, cooperative communications, ad hoc and delay tolerant networks.

Eliane joined Queen Mary University of London in 2003. She is a member of the Communication Systems Research Group and the Centre for Intelligent Sesnsing. Her research projects have been sponsored by EPSRC in the area of alternative and resilient communication for emergencies and sensor networks and in using wireless networks to support first responders and resilience in upland areas. The real demonstrators developed on those grants in sensors networks, delay tolerant networks and in messaging middleware have been showcased. She has also been sponsored by BT in the work in internet centric services. Eliane is a member of the EPSRC Associate Peer Review College, and she is a reviewer of numerous journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Networks, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems and the IET Communications Journal.

Teaching

Communications and Networks (Undergraduate)

This compulsory module covers the basic concepts in communications and networks. It introduces the concept of a communications system and then focusses on specific elements. It covers circuit and switched versus packet switched networks, and the ISO/OSI 7 layer model. Also covered are certain critical network protocols, e.g. TCP/IP and CSMA/CD, key Internet concepts, converged networks, and mobile networks.

C Programming (Undergraduate)

This module introduces the principles of C Programming to students who already know how to program at a basic level in Java. It provides a knowledge of the theory of C Programming and also its practical use in real engineering systems. The focus is on microprocessor based systems.

Enabling Communication Technologies for IoT (Postgraduate/Undergraduate)

This module provides a comprehensive study of the major communication technologies that enable applications on Internet of Things. This module comes as a response to the increasing commercial and research interest in smart everywhere applications, like smart grid, smart city, smart home, industrial automation, telemetry, etc. This module covers the technologies that allow the formation of a network for autonomous communication and processing between devices that supply the vital information, such as sensing and identification for the smart applications . Topics include: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID); Near Field Communication (NFC); Wireless Sensor Networks: covering its major concepts in node sensing, wireless transmission characteristics, medium access protocols, and routing protocols; Wireless Personal Area Networks such as the ones using IEEE802.15.4 standard, Zigbee, Zwave; Low Power Wide Area Networks such as LoRa and Sigfox systems; and Power line communications.
