Teaching

Study telecommunications in China with BUPT and Queen Mary

In 2004, Queen Mary teamed up with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) to offer an innovative set of jointly run degree programmes in telecommunications, systems and networks. The partnership is genuinely equal – students graduate with a degree from BUPT and from Queen Mary University of London, and teaching is split 50/50 between the universities.

The available programmes are:

BSc(Eng) Electronic Information Engineering
BSc(Eng) Intelligent Science and Technology
BSc(Eng) Telecommunications Engineering with Management
BSc(Eng) Internet of Things Engineering
BSc(Eng) E‐Commerce Engineering with Law

The programmes draw on the academic expertise of both institutions, as well as the strengths of two distinct educational cultures – the mathematical and scientific rigour found in China and the emphasis placed on creative problem-solving and transferable skills in the UK. Students graduate with a unique blend of skills, valued in China and around the world.

Why study on the Queen Mary – BUPT Joint Programme/ Joint Education Institute?

If you are planning to work in the field of communications, systems and networks, the Joint Programme (JP)/Joint Education Institute (JEI)  represents an incredible opportunity. The international nature of the telecommunications industry, and the size and influence of China, means that employers everywhere will value your knowledge and understanding of local conditions.

The three programmes cover more ground than a standard UK engineering degree. You will be able to undertake practical work in a state-of-the-art technical training centre and a personal development programme will develop your creative and communication skills. Legal and business modules will supplement your technical education.

All teaching takes place at BUPT in English, with Queen Mary “flying professors” travelling to Beijing to give lectures face-to-face. In between teaching blocks, when Queen Mary staff are not in China, there are facilities for online tutorials, and video/audio/text conferencing. In Year 4, students are given the opportunity to spend the whole of their final year studying at Queen Mary in London.

IET Accredited
The original three programmes (Telecommunications Engineering with Management, Internet of Things Engineering and E‐Commerce Engineering with Law) are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The current JP/JEI Programmes

BSc(Eng) Electronic Information Engineering

Electronic Information Engineering (EIE) is a comprehensive programme covering all aspects of multimedia technology in its static, dynamic and connected forms. This programme is designed to equip graduates with a solid engineering foundation and a deep knowledge of the skills required to carry out scientific research and to solve complex engineering problems in the field of information communication and multimedia.

BSc(Eng) Intelligent Science and Technology

This programme comes as a response to the growing research and commercial interest exponentially for autonomous and intelligent robot, information processing and machine learning that are based on the principles of Intelligent Science and Technology (IST). This is a comprehensive programme covering the applications needed for building complete IST applications, such as industrial automation and cognitive robotics, human-computer interaction, man-made system technology, natural language processing, computer vision and gaming etc.

BSc(Eng) Telecommunications Engineering with Management

The telecommunications specialists of the next decade will need to be multi-skilled to meet the technological demands of international business, with the expertise to build new technology, combined with an understanding of business practice. This programme aims to cultivate high-quality, inter-disciplinary graduates, who understand the latest communication technology, telecommunication systems, information networks and management theories, and who can engage in the operation and management of communications systems.

BSc(Eng) Internet of Things Engineering

This programme comes as a response to the increasing research and commercial interest for autonomous and intelligent applications that are based on the principles of the Internet of Things (IoT). This is a comprehensive programme covering all four structural layers needed for building complete IoT applications, such as smart grids, smart cities, smart homes, industrial automation, telemetry, etc. The programme focuses on computer science’s foundation and support, combined with other disciplines, such as microelectronics, communication networks and economics management.

BSc(Eng) e-Commerce Engineering with Law

Electronic Commerce engineers operate in an industrial and commercial framework. Success depends on managing technical, managerial and legal issues. This programme is designed to give a good understanding of legal principles relating to e-commerce engineering. It aims to cultivate high-quality, inter-disciplinary graduates, who have firm theoretical foundations in economics and management, understand modern information science and technologies, and who can engage in the operation and management side of e-commerce business activities in a range of fields. From academic year 2022-23, the contents of the e-Commerce Engineering with Law programme is being incorporated into the other programmes offered. The last of our current e-Commerce Engineering with Law cohort will graduate from the programme in 2026.
