Interview with Robert Porter for RTE News in September 1969

Video interview with Robert Porter, Minister for Home Affairs in Northern Ireland, for RTE News in September 1969. In August of 1968 the Northern Ireland civil rights movement began public marches in support of its objectives causing community tensions between Catholics and Protestants. In January 1969, Terence O’Neill established an independent enquiry into the disturbances, the Cameron Commission. Its report concluded that Catholics in Northern Ireland were discriminated against by Unionist policies in employment, housing and voting but also stated that the IRA were an influence in the beginning of the civil rights movement. Porter discuss the report with particular reference to the issue of policing.
