In 1984 Ann Travers’ sister Mary was shot dead by the I.R.A. In 2010 Mary McArdle, who had been jailed for her role in the killing, was appointed to the role of Ministerial Special Adviser to the Sinn Fein Culture Minister Caral Ni Chuilin. Ann Travers has since been lobbying for a bill disallowing ex-prisoners guilty of serious paramilitary offences from taking positions as Special Advisers at Stormont. Kavanagh discusses the proposed bill and its implications for former paramilitary prisoners. The Nolan Show is BBC Radio Ulster’s daily current affairs programme.
