Transcript of an interview with Mo Mowlam, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, by George Negus for ABC World in Focus on 19 August 1997. On 12 August Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein debated Ken Maginnis of the Ulster Unionist Party on BBC Newsnight, the first time a UUP representative had agreed to appear beside a member of Sinn Fein on British television. By 17 September Sinn Fein and the UUP had joined the multi-party talks at Stormont which later led to the Belfast Agreement/Good Friday Agreement in April 1998. In this interview Mowlam discusses the potential for negotiation between republicans and unionists.
