Audio interview with Malachi O’Doherty, journalist and broadcaster, and Alex Kane, political commentator, by Stephen Nolan for the Nolan Show on 8 August 2013. The beginning of August had seen increased community tensions in Northern Ireland. On 6 August the Lord Mayor of Belfast Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was attacked by unionist demonstrators at a public event while five days later a contentious Sinn Fein took place in Castlederg, Co. Tyrone. It had been organised in commemoration of two members of the IRA who were killed in Castlederg in 1973 when the bombs they were transporting exploded. In advance of the latter parade O’Doherty and Kane discuss the issue of political leadership in Northern Ireland. The Nolan Show is a daily current affairs programme on BBC Radio Ulster.
