Transcript of an interview with Liam Cosgrave, Irish Taoiseach, by Denis Taylor for the Times on 20 May 1973. In March of that year Fine Gael won the Irish general election and Cosgrave became Taoiseach. Amid increased violence in early 1973, the British government introduced a White Paper entitled ‘Northern Ireland Constitutional Proposals’ which included plans for a devolved power-sharing assembly and a Council of Ireland. Cosgrave discusses his government’s policies on Northern Ireland to date and the merit of the British government’s proposals. The Times is the leading daily newspaper in the United Kingdom.
