Interview with John Major on 21 December 1995

Published:

Transcript of an interview with John Major, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, on 21 December 1995. On 28 November the British and Irish governments issued a Joint Communiqué. This outlined a twin-track process to advance progress on the issues of decommissioning and all-party negotiations. The proposals included the establishment of an independent body to advise the British and Irish governments on paramilitary decommissioning and the beginning of all party negotiations by the end of February 1996. However, a series of killings in Belfast in December 1995 were widely attributed to the IRA casting doubt as to the stability of its ceasefire. In this interview Major outlines his hopes for progress in the Peace Process over the next twelve months.
