Transcript of an interview with John Major, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in Carrickfergus on 18 December 1996. On 10 June all-party negotiations, the Stormont talks, began in Belfast. Sinn Féin was excluded from the discussions on the grounds that the Provisional IRA had not declared a new permanent ceasefire. On 17 December John Bruton and Bill Clinton issued a joint statement declaring their support for Sinn Féin’s inclusion in the talks upon the announcement of a Provisional IRA ceasefire. In this interview Major responds to the Bruton-Clinton statement and discusses the potential for Sinn Féin participation in the Stormont talks in 1997.
