At the general election held two days earlier, the DUP and Sinn Fein maintained their positions as the largest unionist and nationalist parties in Northern Ireland respectively. Meanwhile, David Trimble lost his seat at Westminster for the Upper Bann constituency. McGuinness and Trimble discuss the potential impact of the election results on peace and power sharing in Northern Ireland. Later that day Trimble announced his intention to resign as leader of the UUP. Today is BBC Radio 4’s flagship news and current affairs programme.
