In August 1968 the Northern Ireland civil rights movement began public marches in support of its objectives, causing community tensions between Catholics and Protestants in cities such as Derry/Londonderry. An Apprentice Boys march in that city in August 1969 led to increased violence prompting the British government to send army troops to intervene on 14 August. Bernadette Devlin discusses the tensions in Derry/Londonderry.
