At the general election held four days earlier, the DUP and Sinn Fein maintained their positions as the largest unionist and nationalist parties in Northern Ireland respectively. Meanwhile, David Trimble lost his seat at Westminster for the Upper Bann constituency and announced his intention to resign as leader of the UUP.
