Supreme Court ruling will stop another parliament shutdown, says Professor Peter Hennessy

Professor Hennessy said that Boris Johnson had “acted with immense insensitivity as well as illegality in advising the Queen to approve an order in council proroguing parliament”.

Professor Hennessy said that Boris Johnson had “acted with immense insensitivity as well as illegality in advising the Queen to approve an order in council proroguing parliament” and also referred to “the good chap theory of government”.

“Good chaps of both sexes knew where the lines were drawn and never came anywhere near them, let alone cross them,” the historian told World at One on BBC Radio 4. “One of those key lines is that you do not put the monarch in an embarrassing position, where she may appear to be acting politically. Mr Johnson certainly did that.”
