Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry recognises excellence at the annual awards event

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry gathered at the Barbican last night to recognise those colleagues who had made the most outstanding contributions to scholarship, collegiality, and students over the past year.

This year 183 different individuals were nominated across all categories. All nominees were invited to the event, where they were joined by Faculty Leadership, Institute Directors, Institute Managers, and other staff to celebrate their achievements.

The awards and their winners were:

Outstanding Contribution to Professional and Technical Services Award

  • Commendation: Violet Chan, VP (Health) Office
  • Joint winners:
    • Steven Coppen, Deputy Institute Manager at the William Harvey Research Institute
    • Khalid Rouas, Institute Technician at the Blizard Institute  

Outstanding Team Award

  • Joint winners:
    • Faculty Admissions Team
    • Malta Student Support Team 

EDI Champion Award

  • Commendation: Professor Chloe Orkin
  • Winner: Dr Georgina Hosang, Reader (Associate Professor) in Mental Illness & Chronic Diseases at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health 

Emerging Professional Services Leader Award

  • Commendations:  
    • Rachel Day, VP Health Office 
    • Gillian Vythelingum, Institute of Health Sciences Education 
    • William Ng, Institute of Dentistry
  • Winner: Dr Rebecca Gresham, Principal Laboratory Manager at Barts Cancer Institute

Inspirational Leadership Award

  • Commendations:  
    • Dr Nyree Myatt, Institute of Health Sciences Education 
    • Dr Megan Clinch, Wolfson Institute of Population Health
  • Winner: Professor Chloe Orkin, Professor of Infection and Inequities at the Centre for Immunobiology 

VP Award for Excellence in Citizenship

Research Supervisor of the Year Award 

  • Commendation: Professor Deborah Swinglehurst, Wolfson Institute of Population Health 
  • Winner: Dr Oliver Pearce, Senior Lecturer at Barts Cancer Institute  

Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award 

  • Commendation: Dr Mirjana Efremova, Barts Cancer Institute
  • Winner: Dr Tom Abbott, NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the William Harvey Research Institute

Research Professional of the Year Award

  • Joint winners:
    • Dr Marie Spreckley, Director of Business Operations and Partnerships, Genes and Health, The Blizard Institute
    • Carlos De Oliveira,  Research Manager at the Blizard Institute 

Impact Award 

  • Commendation: Professor Peter Szlosarek, Barts Cancer Institute

Student Experience Excellence Award

  • Dr Dominic Hurst, Senior Clinical Lecturer, Adult Oral Health at the Institute of Dentistry 

Outstanding Early Career Educator Award

  • Jathurshika Vigneswaran, Clinical Lecturer at the Institute of Health Sciences Education 

Education Professional of the Year Award 

  • Dr Nina Ravic, Education Manager at William Harvey Research Institute

VP Award for Education Excellence 

  • Dr Michael Page, Reader in Medical Education at the Institute of Health Sciences Education
