The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list recognises researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research. Each researcher has authored multiple highly cited papers which rank in the top 1% by citations in their field. However, citations aren’t the sole indicator – the preliminary list of top citations goes through a rigorous evaluation process based on research integrity, collaboration and other factors.

Queen Mary’s ranked Highly Cited Researchers for 2023 are:

  • Amrita Ahluwalia, Dean for Research (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry) and Professor of Vascular Pharmacology
  • Tom Powles, Professor of Genitourinary Oncology and Director of the Barts Cancer Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital
  • Gavin Giovannoni, Professor of Neurology
  • Yuanwei Liu, Senior Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science
  • Arumugan Nallanathan, Professor of Wireless Communications, in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science
  • Maged Elkashlan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science

Amrita Ahluwalia, Dean for Research (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry), said:

“I am honoured to be recognised as a highly cited researcher. Research must make a real-life impact on health-related problems, and I am fortunate that I have been able to take my research in vascular pharmacology into the clinical setting as well as contribute to setting best practice standards for early pre-clinical work. As Dean for Research in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, I’m now able to use my experience to lead the Faculty in our mission for better health for all.”

Arumugan Nallanathan, Professor of Wireless Communications, said:

"As the Head of the Communication Systems Research (CSR) group at Queen Mary University of London, I am immensely proud to witness the continuous recognition of our researchers' contributions. Three of our group members have been consistently included in the prestigious list of highly cited researchers, and our Telecommunications engineering department has maintained its top-three position in the UK for the past three consecutive years in the Shanghai ranking. These recognitions truly reflect world-leading research in Telecommunications at our university."

Bar Veinstein, President of Academia & Government at Clarivate said:

“We celebrate the Highly Cited Researchers whose contributions transform our world by helping to make it healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Recognition of Highly Cited Researchers not only validates research excellence but also enhances reputation, fosters collaboration, and informs resource allocation, acting as a beacon for academic institutions and commercial organizations.”
