Professor Paul Evans appointed as the new Dean of Research Impact for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Queen Mary University of London is delighted to announce that Professor Paul Evans has been appointed as the new Dean for Research Impact for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Wales, Professor Evans undertook training in molecular biology at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge before being appointed as a Senior Lecturer then Reader at Imperial College London. He joined the University of Sheffield as Professor of Cardiovascular Science in 2011, and this year became the Chair of Vascular Metabolism at the William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary University of London.  

Professor Evans’ research focusses on the influence of mechanical forces on endothelial cell inflammatory activation and metabolism and how these processes influence atherosclerosis. The aim of this research is to use this knowledge to help diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.  

During his career his research has been published in more than 130 papers, and he has won several prestigious awards - most notably the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Outstanding Achievement Award which is their highest award for scientific excellence. He is Chair-elect of the ESC Council for Basic Cardiovascular Science, working with more than 5000 cardiovascular scientists throughout Europe, and Vice Chair-elect of the Gordon Research Conference on Vascular Biomechanics scheduled for 2025. 

Professor Paul Evans said: “I am delighted to take on this role and look forward to supporting the outstanding and impactful contributions of research from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to health and to addressing social inequalities.” 

Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, VP (Health) said: “I am delighted that Paul, who recently joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FMD) at Queen Mary, will become the new Dean for Research Impact. Paul will join the FMD Research Team as they prepare the ground for the next Research Excellence Framework.”
