Professor Christopher Tredwin to become Queen Mary’s new Dean of Dentistry from 1st August 2023

Queen Mary University of London is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Chris Tredwin as its new Dean of Dentistry and Director of the Institute of Dentistry.

Chris graduated with a Batchelor of Dental Surgery with Distinction in Restorative Dentistry from Queen Mary, following a 1st Class Honours BSc in Physiology. After gaining further experience in NHS practice, he undertook a Masters in Conservative Dentistry with Distinction at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in 2002. He then completed his academic and specialist training in London. Chris took up a Chair and a consultant post in the University of Plymouth and became Head of its Dental School in 2012.

In this role he oversaw development of an innovative five-year Dental programme, a fully integrated Dental Hygiene and Therapy degree and five clinical master’s programmes. Prof Tredwin has led the Plymouth Dental School to a consistent top 3 position in the Guardian University League table, rising to number 1 in the 2022 rankings.

As Chair of the Dental Schools Council, he won emergency Covid investment for all English Dental Schools and Trusts and then developed a safe return policy for dental students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These measures ensured 96.88% of dental students graduated on time in July 2021 from across all three regions.  

Professor Tredwin’s research has led to over 80 papers, and he has supervised 17 PhD students and over 50 Masters projects to date.

As we welcome Chris to the post, we also thank Prof Paul Coulthard for his tremendous leadership of Dentistry at Queen Mary over the past five years. During this time the Institute of Dentistry has developed a strong international reputational and leapt up the international league tables. Paul’s leadership led to the new Barts Centre of Squamous Cancer, funding for Digital Dentistry, appointees in Dental Public Health, making real impact. Paul will continue in Dentistry as Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery focused on his facial trauma research.

Professor Chris Tredwin said: “I am so delighted to have been appointed to lead dentistry at Queen Mary and am really looking forward to working with colleagues in the Institute and at Barts Health to ensure we train the best dentists and transform dental care across east London and beyond.”
