Shanghai University of Finance and Economics visit Queen Mary for the first time since 2015

On Friday 1 December, a delegation from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) visited Queen Mary University of London. This was their first visit to Queen Mary since 2015 – and also the first visit of their current President, Professor Yuanchan Liu, who took up his post in April 2022.

About the SUFE delegation

SUFE is the oldest financial university in China – and is ranked the best in China among universities that specialise in finance, business and economics, according to the most recent edition of the recognised Best Chinese Universities Ranking.

SUFE’s delegation was planned to celebrate the 11-year partnership between the two institutions. In particular, SUFE signed a renewal of a study abroad programme with the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film – enabling students from both institutions to study at each respective institution for a period of time.

Speaking about the partnership, Principal and President Colin Bailey CBE said: “It’s a pleasure to welcome this delegation from SUFE to campus. They are an important partner for us in China. It’s particularly important because this is the first time that we have welcomed Professor Yuanchan Liu to Queen Mary. We look forward to working closer together in the near future – for the benefit of our students and SUFEs students.”

Professor Yuanchan Liu, President of SUFE, said: “Queen Mary is one of the key global partners of SUFE. The diverse cooperation between us has generated opportunities for us to fulfil our respective goals for development and social responsibilities as well. We value the partnership and friendship very much and are grateful for Queen Mary’s continuous trust and support. I am convinced that there will be more opportunities for Queen Mary and SUFE to build even stronger ties that will benefit our students, staff and society at large.”

Queen Mary’s partnership with SUFE

Queen Mary has been working with SUFE since 2012. This includes:

  • Enrolments via SUFE’s Masters in International Organisation degree – which sees five to 10 students enrolled annually since 2016 to take part in a Postgraduate programme at Queen Mary.
  • An agreement with our School of Economics for SUFE School of Economics students to come to Queen Mary for a Postgraduate degree.
  • Exchange programme with the School of Economics and Finance and the School of Business Management. This was recently extended to include the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film.

Zhuoxin Ye, who is a student who has come to Queen Mary from SUFE said: “Thanks to the partnership programme, the best thing is that I have more opportunities to see, experience, and think about the world. Collaborating with classmates from all over the world, enjoying world-class educational resources, and participating in numerous meaningful activities are some of the best things about Queen Mary.”

Mr. Rong Jun, Vice Dean of the International Cultural Exchange School of SUFE, said: "QMUL is one of the key global partners of SUFE. The diverse cooperation between us has been leveraging the profound expertise and enduring commitment from both sides, and has generated precious opportunities for us to fulfill our respective goals for development and social responsibilities as well. We value the partnership and friendship very much and are grateful for QMUL’s continuous trust and support. I am convinced that there will be more opportunities for QMUL and SUFE to build even stronger ties that will benefit our students, staff and the society at large. Thanks again for the gracious hospitality and we also look forward to the pleasure of receiving our QMUL colleagues in Shanghai."
