Major new appointment for QMUL’s School of Dentistry

Professor Nikolaos Donos, an internationally renowned clinical academic consultant, has been appointed Head of Clinical Research and Professor of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Dentistry.

Professor Donos is currently based at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, where he holds a number of senior leadership roles including Director of Research, Head of Department of Clinical Research, Director of Eastman Clinical investigation Centre and Oral Health Hub Lead for the UCLH Biomedical Research Centre.

In his new role within QMUL, Professor Donos will help establish and lead a new Clinical Research Centre in the Institute, with dedicated facilities designed to benefit a range of groups including clinical researchers within the wider school and our local patient population in East London.

This appointment is exceptional news for the dental school, and a significant development in our ambition to expand the school’s clinical research activities.”

Professor Richard Trembath, Vice-Principal for Health at Queen Mary University of London, added: “This appointment underlines our strategic ambition to grow and develop our programme of patient orientated clinical research, following our success in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF).”

Professor Nikolaos Donos qualified in dentistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1992 and completed his clinical training in Periodontology at the Royal Dental College, University of Aarhus, Denmark in 1994. He has a Master of Science in Periodontology and received his PhD in 1998.

In 1999, he was appointed as Clinical Lecturer at the Royal Dental College, University of Aarhus, Denmark. In May 2000, he was granted the internationally prestigious ITI Straumann Fellowship and he moved to the Department of Periodontology & Fixed Prosthodontics, University of Berne, Switzerland.

In 2001 he joined the Eastman Dental Institute. He was appointed to the Chair and Head of the Periodontology in January 2005. He is currently the Director of Research Strategy of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and the Head of the Department of Clinical Research as well as the Hub Lead for Oral Health UCLH/UCL BRC. He is also Head & Chair of Periodontology and Programme Director for the MclinDent training programme in Periodontology. Through his role as the Director of the Eastman Clinical Investigation Centre and his research grants in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, he contributed significantly in developing and promoting clinical research at the Eastman and forged significant links with a number of major industrial partners

Professor Donos is involved as editorial board member in a number of international and national peer-reviewed journals in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and has also published extensively in both fields.

I also look forward to becoming an integral part of the clinical academic and basic scientist teams, and helping facilitate the delivery of the vision and strategic targets of the school.”
