Queen Mary, University of London has been rated amongst the world’s top 150 universities in the QS World Rankings 2012 – the prestigious annual league table of international higher education institutions.
Queen Mary placed in 147th position globally out of 700 universities, a dramatic rise of 25 places since 2011. The College is ranked 23rd out of the UK universities who make the table, a rise of three places from 2011. Overall, London is considered the second best city in the world in which to live and study.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has been ranking the world’s top universities since 2004. To compile the 2012 league table, the education specialists take information from 46,000 survey respondents who were questioned about the strengths of local and national universities in research, employability, teaching and ‘internationalisation’.
QS also surveys graduate employers, collecting data this year from more than 25,000 individuals. The research currently considers more than 2,000 universities, and ranks 700. The top 400 receive an individual placing, with those listed outside the top-400 ranked in groups.
In addition to an overall table, the universities are ranked by their academic reputation in five broad faculty areas. Queen Mary’s Arts and Humanities subjects are placed at number 93 in the top 400. The College also reaches the top 200 in the Life Sciences and Medicine table.
Commenting on this latest success, Queen Mary’s Principal, Professor Simon Gaskell says: “This significant rise in our global and national position, in the same year that we also joined the Russell Group of leading UK universities, consolidates Queen Mary’s international reputation as an institution committed to research and teaching excellence.”
