The Farmers’ Market at Queen Mary, University of London celebrates England’s glorious orchards this Thursday (18 October) with a festival of homegrown apples.
Apple bobbing, apple and spoon races and juice pressing demonstrations take place this Apple Day at Queen Mary Farmers’ Market, alongside the usual array of hot and cold food stalls. Visitors will have the chance to try rare types of apples, pears and juices that are not on sale in supermarkets.
“The apples and pears on sale on Apple Day will be seasonal and brought straight from the farm by the grower,” sayss Arthur Betts of London Farmers’ Markets. “It’s fruit at their best - their season means they have optimum taste, and they’re grown in areas where they thrive.”
Arthur adds: “We’ll have many Mertons, a plethora of Pippins, perfect Pearmains and several seedlings. These names may reflect the areas from which the fruit hails – Ribston Pippin or Howgate Wonder; or bear the names of their makers such as Lady Studeley. Others, such as the Devonian cider apple Slack Ma Girdle, may be a warning against overindulgence, or an inducement for it!”
