Queen Mary students join the London Legal Walk 2011

Students from Queen Mary, University of London joined thousands of legal workers for this year’s Legal Walk on Monday 16 May.

More than 5,000 legal professionals took part and raised over £450,000 for free legal services in London. Queen Mary was represented by teams from the Legal Advice Centre and the Student Bar Society.

Organised by the London Legal Support Trust, the annual walk gives the legal profession a chance to do something outstanding as a team. Throughout the year many law firms and legal organisations offer their services to the community (pro bono), but the Legal Walk raises awareness and shows their commitment in another way.

Julie Pinborough, Centre Manager for the Legal Advice Centre at Queen Mary, said: “The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre is part of these crucial services and we wanted to demonstrate this by raising over £1,000 for our chosen charities of Galop and the Whitechapel Mission.

“Both these charities are underfunded, yet provide crucial free legal advice services to the London community. With funding being cut, it was important for us as a collective group to help out where possible and the London Legal Walk provided us with the opportunity.”

The Queen Mary Student Bar Society raised £150 for the Legal Support Trust. Gianni Sonvico, President of the Bar Society, said: "The Bar Society was proud to be a small part of such a successful event for such a worthy cause. We also had a lot of fun on the day!"
