I think the thing that surprised me most, was myself. From learning to deal with and overcome my anxieties, to writing a detailed and comprehensive thesis, I was challenged throughout the MSc process and was able to rise to each challenge and ultimately succeed with my work, which lead me into pursuing research at PhD level.

The MA from Queen Mary has allowed me to segue into my field of interest. I am currently working at The Citizens Foundation (TCF), a Pakistan-based NGO that provides education to more than 250,000 under-privileged children across Pakistan.

If I could go back and do it all again, I would. I have gained so much knowledge in only one year and didn’t want it to end! It’s such a great place to study, and the course was faultless. If you’re unsure, don’t be – just do it.

My course gave me the ideal preparation for the job I am in now, as it covered all the aspects of river monitoring and management which I am expected to know for my job.
The general atmosphere around campus and within the School of Geography was friendly and supportive, making it a good environment in which to learn and excel. There are so many opportunities to develop yourself and I took advantage of these whilst making lots of friends on the way. This was the perfect MSc for me as my goal is to establish a career in research and it provided the right stepping stone.
The academic and professional staff were really supportive throughout my BSc, so I knew they would be great mentors to support me in my postgraduate studies. I developed a strong bond with them, my peers and the uni. It still feels like I am ‘coming home’ when I visit campus.

I had developed a profound interest in the inequalities of global health and knew that I wanted to pursue a career in helping to combat these imbalances - whether that was through research, service provision, or policy. This degree stood out to me due to the perfect balance of health and geography modules, something I believed (and still do!) would give me valuable elevation into the field.

What really drew me to study at Queen Mary was the focus on building up employable skills and the close links the course had with many aspects of the water industry. The course content looked as if it gave a really comprehensive overview of water management which directly related to a lot of topical issues.
As a government officer of a developing country, I strongly believe that the education that I received allowed me to enhance my technical skills and professional expertise to contribute to the development process and global integration of my country in such a competitive and dynamic global economic order.
I collaborated with lecturers and classmates who I am proud to say are still very close friends of mine. The programme gave myself and my classmates a great opportunity to learn from each other as well as the foundational theories taught in each course.
I am looking forward to sharing my interest in geography with younger students to encourage more people to study geography. Having completed my MA, I’ve learned about the diversity of geography as a discipline, and I hope to pass this onto my students.
