Overview

Artificial intelligence is an increasingly important area of computer science, rapidly changing the way we live, work and learn.

This programme will equip you with extensive knowledge and the solid practical skills required to solve real-world problems. Taught by world-leading experts, from our cutting edge research groups, you will learn a comprehensive range of topics from different areas of modern computer science and artificial intelligence including:

  • Computer Programming,
  • Operating Systems, Algorithms and Data Structures,
  • Machine Learning,
  • Natural Language Processing,
  • AI for Decision Making,
  • Game AI,
  • Robotics and Deep Learning.

Your first year will focus on exploring the main and fundamental concepts of computer science. During your second year, you will enhance these skills as well as gain an introduction and overview of the artificial intelligence field and its different areas. In the final year, you will be able to pick from two different streams with fixed diets:

  1. Vision and Data stream: focused on computer vision, data mining and Natural Language Processing.
  2. Games and Music stream: focused on applications of AI to different disciplines, preliminarily to music and games.

In the final year, you’ll design an individual project based on your own interests and linked to research areas in the School, such as Big Data, Game AI, Machine, Deep and Reinforcement Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Robotics or AI and Music.

Please note that placements are highly competitive and awarded based on your application, academic track record and performance at interview. If you are not successful in securing a placement, your third year will be spent at Queen Mary completing your studies.

Teaching

Teaching and learning

You’ll spend 15 to 20 hours per week in lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials. You will also be expected to complete additional hours of independent study. You’ll meet your personal adviser regularly to ensure that you are settling in and progressing well. 

Assessment

Assessment typically includes a combination of coursework (presentations, assignments, essay report writing, in-class tests, research and project work) and/or examinations in May or June.

Individual and group projects are assessed through a written report, practical demonstration and oral examination.

Resources and facilities

The School offers excellent on-campus resources to aid your studies, including an informatics teaching laboratory with more than 300 PCs running Linux and Windows.

Funding

Loans and grants

UK students accepted onto this course are eligible to apply for tuition fee and maintenance loans from Student Finance England or other government bodies.

Scholarships and bursaries

Queen Mary offers a generous package of scholarships and bursaries, which currently benefits around 50 per cent of our undergraduates.

Scholarships are available for home, EU and international students. Specific funding is also available for students from the local area. International students may be eligible for a fee reduction. We offer means-tested funding, as well as subject-specific funding for many degrees.

The demand for graduates in artificial intelligence is high; AI jobs are amongst the best paid in the industry, and a solid background in AI is highly desirable in many research disciplines.

Despite the prevalence of AI, there is still a shortage of talent in the industry. Graduating with a BSc in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence will position you at the forefront of the job market due to the significant need both nationally and internationally for more undergraduates to fill these positions.
