Workshop on Small States and EU Policymaking in the Era of Polycrisis

When: Thursday, May 11, 2023 - Friday, May 12, 2023, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Where: Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London,E1 4NS

Between the 11th and 12th May, the PSA's Greek Politics Specialist Group and the Centre for European Research at Queen Mary University London organised a workshop on small states and EU policymaking in the era of polycrisis. Participants engaged with a wide range of topics from how the polycrisis redefines the concept of small states to foreign policy analysis, voting behaviour and local development.

In particular, the workshop started with a discussion on the concept of small states and how their definition and operation changed due to and during the polycrisis. This theoretical discussion was followed by a section focused on the foreign policy of small EU states. As such, participants discussed how small states managed the different crises of the EU and how the latter influenced the permanent foreign policy challenges that they face. The following panel turned towards the domestic sphere, examining how the different EU crises changed the domestic political discourse and power dynamics in small EU states. The final section focused on the political economy of small states, examining how the EU and the crisis context altered the potential for cooperation in small states.

The workshop concluded with a discussion of common research themes. Participants also considered future steps for the further consolidation of a research agenda on small EU states.
