The French-British Strategic Dialogue, hosted by the Center for European Research at Queen Mary University in Paris at the initiative of Professor Sarah Wolff and Dr. Pierre Haroche, will gather on the 25th of January high-level practitioners, academics and experts. This Strategic Dialogue will enable stakeholders to engage with a scoping exercise around the priorities of the Franco-British summit as well as more specific thematic in-depth discussion. Next to providing a Chatham House rule venue to discuss the Franco-British relationship, this Strategic Dialogue is seeking to launch a regular series of events and structured dialogues that will feed into the bilateral relationship and connect experts in the field through Franco-British scientific network.

The dialogue will support the Franco-British summit in March 2023 by formulating policy recommendations. This event will help us to reflect on the state of the Franco-British relationship and its prospects for joint actions as security providers in Europe and beyond. After difficult years marked by the debates over Brexit, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the rise of US-China rivalry give the two countries —two nuclear powers with close strategic cultures and a shared desire to maintain their global ambitions — a crucial role. What future for Franco-British defence cooperation in a Europe marked by the return of high intensity war? What European security architecture do the two countries seek to build and through which formats? What are the potential synergies in terms of military and economic support for Ukraine? What joint security initiatives could the two countries undertake in other regions? To what extent does the nature of the Franco-British relationship enable or constraints the future of EU-UK cooperation?

This event is on invitation only, but you can contact Prof. Sarah Wolff s.wolff@qmul.ac.uk in case of interest.
