Systems, Governance & Power

We deliver critical, policy-orientated, inter-disciplinary research and teaching related to health systems, financing, and governance. This work is influenced by our diverse academic backgrounds in international relations, politics, sociology, anthropology, health services, and economics. We cover a range of contexts – from Geneva to Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East – and use a variety of methods, including interviews, case studies, surveys, political economy analysis, and literature reviews. We draw from our current research collaborations in South America, Africa, and Asia to develop innovative research programmes on medicines, human resources for health, health policies, and provision of healthcare services. Most recently, we have published on topics such as Universal Health Coverage and the private sector in LICs; the WHO’s funding crisis; racial capitalism and the liberal international order; health service provision in Gambia , Tanzania and Kenya; the use of telemedicine and health labour markets in Brazil during the covid-pandemic; the impact of armed conflict on health in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen; and global health diplomacy between Brazil and Mozambique.
