Speaker in Malaysia

Fiona Samuels and Aisling Murray spent 5 days in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, (5th-9th May) running group discussions with parents and children (age 12-16) and co-convening with UNU-IIGH a high-level stakeholder meeting on youth mental health in Malaysia. The aim of these meetings and discussions, and as requested by Malaysian stakeholders, was to explore the possibilities of implementing a co-adapted school-based mental health intervention(SBMH), drawing on the regional early success of the M-BRIGHT project (which focuses on building capacity to co-design/adapt and implement a SBMH intervention in Vietnam and Cambodia). The stakeholder meeting participants included representatives from the ministries of health, education and digital, NGOs, academics, donors and UN. Next steps include establishing a community of practice, publishing a Comment and/or a working paper and applying for funding to extend the M-BRIGHT approach in the ASEAN region, including in Malaysia and beyond.
