Overview

Do you want to study both computer science and electronic engineering, developing a broad skill-set across both disciplines?

This unique programme includes the digital design elements of the electronic engineering programmes, but also emphasises computer systems and software. We focus on the increasingly important areas of embedded systems, network computing, internet protocols and applications.

In the first year you’ll cover the foundations of each discipline, with modules in programming, circuit design, communications and signals. With a wide choice of modules in your second and final years, you’re free to direct your studies towards your aims and interests.

In the final year, you’ll design and carry out an individual project based on your own interests and linked to current research areas within the schools.

Professional recognition

Our BEng Computer Systems Engineering programme is CEng accredited and fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc.  In addition, the programme meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.

Our MEng Computer Systems Engineering programme is CEng accredited and fulfils the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Structure

You can complete your Computer Systems Engineering degree in three or four years. If you choose to do a year in industry or study abroad, this will take place in Year 3 and Year 3 modules will instead be studied in Year 4.

Please note that placements are highly competitive and awarded based on your application, academic track record and performance at interview. If you are not successful in securing a placement, your third year will be spent at Queen Mary completing your studies.

Teaching and Facilities

Teaching and learning

You’ll spend 15 to 20 hours per week in lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials. You will also be expected to complete additional hours of independent study. You’ll meet with your personal adviser regularly to ensure that you are settling in and progressing well.

Assessment

Assessment typically includes a combination of coursework (presentations, assignments, essay report writing, in-class tests, research and project work) and/or examinations in May or June.

Individual and group projects are assessed through a written report, practical demonstration and oral examination.

Resources and facilities

The schools offer excellent on-campus resources to aid your studies, including an award-winning informatics teaching laboratory with more than 300 PCs running Linux and Windows. We are investing £30m to expand our state-of-the-art engineering labs.

Access HEWe consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve an 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis. Due to the high volume of applications, we do not make offers of study purely on the basis of meeting grade requirements. An additional entry Maths test will be required if you do not hold A-Level Mathematics at grade B or above.
GCSEMinimum five GCSE passes including English at grade C or 4.
EPQAlternative offers may be made to applicants taking the Extended Project Qualification.

Loans and grants

UK students accepted onto this course are eligible to apply for tuition fee and maintenance loans from Student Finance England or other government bodies.

The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science carries out world-class computer science research – and applies it to real-life problems.
